Shifting attention to statistics revealing that employed Indian women engage in nearly six times more unpaid care work than their male counterparts, a recent strategy paper on the care economy underscores the imperative to reform leave policies, subsidize care services, develop infrastructure, and establish institutional mechanisms to address evolving challenges in light of India’s changing demographic landscape. The paper estimates that the economic value of women’s unpaid care and domestic work constitutes approximately 15%-17% of India’s GDP, emphasizing the need for strategic interventions.
