Lai Ching-te was inaugurated as Taiwan’s new president on Monday, stepping into a role fraught with challenges. He faces a deeply distrustful China, which views him as a “separatist,” and a divided parliament with a determined opposition ready to contest his leadership. Previously serving as vice president under Tsai Ing-wen for the last four years, Lai took the oath of office in central Taipei.
